You can never have too much storage space
If there’s one room where everyone goes, it’s the bathroom. Very often, it’s also the place where there’s the least space. Between dad’s comb, mom’s hairbrush and the youngster’s hair clips, your bathroom counter soon gets cluttered. Fortunately, there is a whole range of space-saving accessories you can install on walls or inside cupboard doors. For example, baskets, toothbrush or soap holders, the choice is up to you. Also, adding a shelf above your bathroom counter can be very handy. As well as providing more space, you can add decorative elements.
Dépôt IDEAS: In Winter, the entrance hall can get to look like a war zone. If you have enough space, why not build yourself a storage bench? You can use it to put away all kinds of stuff including gloves, scarves and hats and the kids can sit on it to get dressed before going out to play in the snow. |

A Nice Warm Winter
Did you know that heating represents about 60% of the energy your household consumes? Make sure to check that there is not loss of heat from your house. Changing the sealant on windows and doors can be a very simple and economic solution. Your house has no leaks, but you’re still cold? Maybe your heating units are incorrectly oriented. Think about installing a modern heating system, like a convection set up. Elegant and effective, it will help you stay nice and warm without increasing your heating bills.
Dépôt IDEAS: You’ve just finished your basement? Install a fireplace or a slow combustion stove. The whole house will benefit from the heat given off and, of course, there’s nothing like spending a long romantic Winter evening with the love of your life in front of a log fire. If you already have a fireplace or a stove, don’t forget to have it checked and maintained before Winter in order to reduce risk of fires. |

Define your basement’s use
Is your basement full of old furniture and junk you’ve inadvertently collected over the years? It’s time to start over and make it modern, attractive and comfortable. Before undertaking any major work, its best to decide just exactly what you want to use the basement for. Do you want to make a recreation room for the kids, a multimedia centre, a gym, a home office, a wine cellar or a workshop for odd jobbing? Think about your current needs and what they will be in 5 or 10 years. If you are in doubt, our Project Guides can advise you with regard to your needs and present you with a range of possible options.
Dépôt IDEAS: Generally, the basement is darker than the rooms upstairs. To make the most of the space and light, use an open plan concept as this will help with natural light and make it look bigger. Don’t forget the often neglected space under the stairs. You can use it to store you washing equipment, your out-of-season clothes and your heating wood. |

A Question of Surface
Before choosing your floor surface, it’s advisable to think about building an under-floor or laying down concrete. They will help stop humidity coming up from the concrete slab. Then you can be as creative as you like. There’s linoleum, known for its resistance to humidity and fire; wall-to-wall carpet or mats, soft and comfortable for your feet; laminated, hyper-resistant to knocks and wear; tiles, durable and versatile; and wood, chic and timeless. For ceilings, acoustic tiles have the advantage of facilitating electrical and plumbing repairs without any demolition.
Dépôt IDEAS: Are your brown plywood walls just too old-school for you? Paint them! Sand down the surface first to make it more adhesive, then apply an undercoat of alkyd and leave it to dry for 16 to 24 hours. You can then apply the latex or alkyd paint of your choice! |

Programmed for Winter!
Did you know that lowering the temperature at home in Winter can save as much as 5% of your heating bills? Programmable electronic thermostats have timers which automatically regulate the temperature of each room according to how you live your life. As a result, you can lower the temperature a few degrees when you sleep or when you are at work. It’s a solution that’s both ecological and economical while bringing you comfort and warmth.
Dépôt IDEAS: Humidity increases when we let the ambient air around us grow cold. If you have humidity problems in Winter (condensation on windows, mould), sort them out before thinking about installing programmable thermostats. A dehumidifier might represent a good solution. |
