Craftsman(R) All-Purpose Utility Knife - String Cutter - 3 Blades is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice product, but poor instructions I had a hard time figuring out how to put the blade in. I'm used to utilities knives where you unscrew the screw on the side, open the whole thing up, put the blade in, then screw it back together. But this doesn't work that way. There's a graphic on the back of the package showing how to do it, but it's a little vague and there are no written instructions. (Couldn't find any online, either). What you do is slide the metal grip lever all the way forward. When you do that, you'll notice the little black button on the side near the blade end sticks out a little bit. Push that black button in. That releases the grip on the blade, so you can slide a new blade in (or take an old one out). Once the blade is in, release the black button and you're good to go. Really easy, actually. Would have given it 5 stars had Craftsman made the instructions more clear. The weight and grip are good, and I like the different levels of retractability.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Setup Failed: Operation Unsuccessful Well appears I have wasted my money. Glad was a gift card. Anyway I bought the retractable knife; but noticed you have to add the actual blade. I tried for about several months (5) on and off giving up. The blade does not fit and then gets stuck. Oh forgot to add the screw that came with it doesn't even fit. I was wondering why so loose. Additionally was a pain just to even take it off its package. Didn't think I needed a Phd to unlock this blade or cheat codes. Buyers beware do not purchase this item i might use it with the blade stuck due to I have some projects need a slicing but will have to store it in a safe space since it cant retract (doesn't stay retracted) and stays extended. Plus still looking for a screw to fit the hole at the handle.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Blade This is a good blade with a nice grip. I used it to cut out and replace some dry wall. I did not give it a 5 star because there was some hard glue in the blade slot from the manufacturing process. This made it hard to install the blade the first time. Good product, great price. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Would not Work I took this utility knife home and it would not work. The blade would not move. The open/closing slide was frozen and would not move. Blade storage would open and I retrived a blade, but there was no way to insert it. I took it back for a replacement. When I got the replacement, I made sure the CSR loaded it for me and that it would work before I purchased it. With that happening, I was satisfied with the product. The replacement worked fine. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Instructions????? I bought the Craftsman Retractable Utility Knife because I have always had good experiences with Craftsman tools. I needed to cut some padding that I had purchased for an area carpet. After reviewing information that came on the knife, youtubes, and your website, I can't figure out how to get the blade out. And I don't have the correct size screwdriver to dismantle the knife. I am so annoyed. This should not be a complicated set up. Another trip tomorrow am to return.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Best comfort, but impossible to put back together This utility knife felt the most comfortable and natural to hold, out of over a dozen different models stocked at my local Lowe's. I happily bought it, but when I got home I discovered that the screw is a torx or star type that is smaller than anything I have in my kit. I found a hex key that fit, and figured that I could live with that, even though Craftsman should have used a more common fastener type, or at least included a tool to open the handle with. The knife was a little difficult to get apart, and nearly impossible to reassemble. There is a weirdly shaped hard plastic piece that I cannot get to fit in anywhere and there are no instructions. I think it is supposed to keep the blade tight, as without it the blade has a lot of play and is pretty much useless. At this point I don't even want to learn how to put that part back in as it would be very easily lost when changing the blade anywhere other than at a nice clean bench. Well, it's back to Lowe's now to find a simpler and more user-friendly utility knife.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible design Bought this knife at my local Lowe’s store after I lost my old knife. Worked great for first couple cuts now the blade comes out when ever cutting pressure is applied. First couple times it came out I just reinstalled the blade until it came out and cut my hand. Horrible product, horrible design. Been working construction for 13 years. Would never recommend this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can’t cut without putting a blade in. I can’t open the blade storage. Why did you guys make such a horrible product. I’m going to throw it across the yard into the woods. It would be more useful there. You could have created a utility knife with a blade installed already. This way you’d trick the consumer into thinking it’s a good product up until they have to change the blade.
