Do I have to change the oil or just add to this model?

Asked by: Rudy42O
Thank you for your question. Yes for best performance and long life change the initial oil after the first five hours of use, then once per season thereafter.

Can it self-propel without cutting? I typically use lawn mowers between trees and design the yard with my lawn tractor. I was told that a limitation of all Cub Cadet lawn mowers is that when you disengage the cutting system, the unit powers off.

Asked by: wmartinca
The blades turn as you start the engine. You cannot self-propel with the engine off however the blades will turn with the self-propelled off.

Cub Cadet Self-Propelled Gas Lawn Mower - 190 cc- 21-in is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bad drive control I have this for few days. My complaint was the AWD systems. It has the triggers to control FWD, RWD or AWD. IF the trigger is pulled fully, then mower propels at full speed and that is too fast for normal walk behind mower. I have trouble to keep the mower with consistent pace speed. It was a poor design, since mower moves forward faster then causes the speed trigger is pulled harder. We want a negative feedback drive control, not a positive feedback. Other complaint, the mower is hard to turn around. The positive things are good honda engine quiet and powerful, mulching is a plus. I may have to return this mower due to drive system problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall, Very Nice Honda engine starts easily, auto choke is a nice feature, is reasonably quiet. Once set to your liking (dials on bottom of control panel) auto drive is very good. I have it set up so the front wheels drive slower than the back and generally don't use it as 4WD. Although that is nice on steep ground. Variable speed takes a bit of practice getting consistent but it didn't take long. Negatives? It is a bit heavy to move around sans any wheels driving. And the bag does dump clippings on the ground when removed. Neither of these bother me enough to move off my 5 star rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lawn mower, would highly recommend Bought this lawn mower last week, very easy to setup, started on the first pull. The drive controls take a few minutes to get the proper feel but I think it is engineered really well. I read the complaint from mowerman99 and john99 (reviews are almost word for word, probably the same guy) but I think he is way off base, maybe if a person cannot keep their hand grip at a certain pressure it would be hard to handle but for most everyone it should be fine. It cuts really well, and has a lot of power. I would highly recommend this mower.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost Perfect My lawn has some very steep hills and I’ve tried multiple lawn mowers on it including riding mowers. The cub cadet is by far the best. It’s worth it to pay a little more for the 190cc engine. Starts on one pull. The trigger style handles are much more comfortable than the standard push bar style. The rear wheel drive has amazing traction and could climb a mountain. The front wheel does not seem to grip well and I very rarely use it. Once in a while if the mower starts to slip on a hill I will squeeze the front wheel trigger just to get it back on track but other than that you will find that you mostly use the rear. Bag attachment clips on easily and the assembly was very little, took only about 5 mins, it’s 90% assembled out of the box which is nice. Almost perfect mower, worth the money

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality, Excellent Mower Just purchased this mower recently and have used it a few times. Set up was a breeze and the Honda motor is effortless to start and runs strong. It does an excellent job cutting and the AWD works really well. The mower is able to fill the bag full of grass (something my Craftsman I am replacing it with couldn't), however the bag design leaves grass clipping on the left side loose so you would need to be careful when emptying or you with have some loose clippings to pick up. Overall I am very happy with this mower and would recommend it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Used once and great so far I bought this earlier this week as our Craftsman self propelled, front wheel drive couldn't handle what I need to cut and died. I spent hours researching 5-6 different makes, to the point it annoyed my wife. I wanted a mower that will last for years. I was looking at Lawnboy, John Deere, Toro, Snapper, Honda, and Troybilt. It came down to this mower and Toro based on reviews. Ultimately the Toro "easy store" model had more issue with the motor and quality of product. I liked that this had a powerful 190 cc Honda engine as well as the Craftsman Briggs and Stratton motor always gave me issues. If there ever are any motor issues, I can easily find a Honda dealer, versus some random lesser known motor. I'll tell you the minor "cons" to start as they aren't anything that would change my mind on recommending buying this model. 1)Too much plastic, BUT this is found on all mowers these days so the companies can continue making money off you. I hunted a long time to find something durable and out of the mowers I mentioned above, this mower seemed to be better designed even on the plastic parts. Unless you spend thousands, I can't see you being able to get away from plastics. 2) I had to return the first mower due to the nut on the rear wheel not being on properly. Someone in the factory cross-threaded it making it unable to tighten all the way. I had not put oil or gas in the machine so Lowes didn't have an issue with it. LOOK over the mower before filling up fluids or you cannot return it and will have to go through the warranty. I had an employee open the box on the exchange and pop off all the wheel covers and was good to go. 3) This really isn't even a con but more of a habit. I like to walk counter clockwise around objects but the rear wheel adjustment prevents you from getting really close due to the yellow knob. Solution, walk clockwise. The Pro's. 1) The motor runs smooth the entire time even going up hills. I have a lot of hills and needed something that helped keep it time efficient. The comparable Toro according to reviews could not do the same. 2) The ability to use front wheel drive, rear wheel drive together or each on their own. While it takes a bit of getting used to how far to pull each trigger for the speed, once you figure this out it makes mowing the grass fun again. The amount of power you can get is impressive. If I wanted I could jog up hills with it. I do not recommend using any of the self propelling going down the hill. Everyone said I should get a riding mower but due to the hills we have and just under 1/2 acre it didn't make sense to and I am glad I went with this instead. 3) The wheel adjustment is 2 levers total, not 4, 1 for each wheel. 4) The plastic parts seem more durable than the competition. 5) Once the oil and gas circulated in the motor, it started on the first pull. I had wanted the model up with electric start but couldn't justify spending $200.00 more for an unknown cub cadet motor, an extra 6 cc, and electric start. I recommend this to anyone who wants a self-propelled mower. The large wheels on the back, the powerful motor, and all wheel drive option makes hills seem like nothing and flat lawns take no time at all. The flat areas of my lawn took half the amount of time they did with my Craftsman and I would use this over a lawn tractor because its fun to drive and you get exercise(if you have under 1 acre). I will try and follow up with another review either at the end of the season or next year. Get it on sale at $499.99 as opposed to the regular $699.99

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest Mower Ever The grass bagging sytem is the best.....even long thick grass gets thrown to the back of the bag. Plenty of pwer. The optional FWD, RWD, AWD and variable speed allows you to optomize cutting regardless of terrain/layout.
Date published: 2017-07-15
Rated 1 out of 5 by from RWD is kicking out I bought the mower on Mon 25th. Used for the first time on the 26th. It started on the first pull no problem. My yard is flat and I used it mower for about 45min. During that time the rear wheel drive kicked out about 7 times, stopping you dead to the point that you walk into the handlebar. If I engage the FWD, the front tires just spin in the grass. You have to disengage both drives and pull the mower backwards before it will self propel again . First impression is not very good.
