Electric String Trimmer/Edger - 6.5 A - 14" is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 227.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best StringTrimmer on the market This is my second Black & Decker Electric Sting Trimmer & Edger. The 1st one lasted about 5 years and was made by Black & Decker but called a Grass Hog but is basically the same trimmer as the new one. The only difference is that this one comes with a wheel attachment for making edging easier. This trimmer is great because it is self feeding on the line and you don't have to bump the ground to feed new line. Also being electric, it is not as loud as the standard/traditional gas trimmer that are very loud (even with ear protectors). I am in my mid 60's and need to save my hearing. One of the biggest causes of Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is loud noises.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Short life I purchase the GH900 a few months ago to replace an old B & D cordless that lasted me for many years. I think that since that time the quality has diminished. The GH900 started losing power after a few uses, then stopped altogether. It is still under warranty, but I cannot find the receipt.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from should go back to the old taap and go i had tap and go weed for years. it died after years of use. i bought one with auto line feed. bought second spool for it. has p;enty of power but the problem was the line feed. you could only edge or cut 4 foot without putting on more line. went though 4 big rolls of line . i turn it on and held it up and watched the line run off the spool without cutting a thing. had enought and took it back to lowes and got money back. only used 3 or 4 times.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Questionable purchase Bought the GH900 to replace my GH710 which I loved. Assembly was easy. However, the shaft is shorter and the debris deflector smaller than the 710. As the operator, be prepared for debris bombardment and definitely wear safety goggles and long pants. Also found a reduction in the RPM's when used in the edging mode.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from String Reel Is Too Small I can't figure out why B&D would make a very nice string trimmer that holds a reel with only 30 feet of string. If you use it on a sidewalk or on pavers, which is why I bought it, the reel literally runs out in about 15 minutes. They are the smallest string trimmer reels that I have ever seen! What's with them?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Useful Yard Tool Light, yet powerful - handles tall weeds and thick stems without slowing down. Easy to handle - I'm over 6' and the extension was more than sufficient. Well balanced - I won't say effortless, but much easier than any gas trimmer I've had. The edger works like a champ - provides crisp borders on walks, drives, flower beds, and gutters. With the line coming out the end of the handle, it was automatic to easily move it out of the way and keep on going. Well designed, engineered, and built.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Low quality Poor design for refilling twine with cartridges, lock pin falls out and easy to lose. Spring cap plastic can't take much abuse. Broke with in 3 months of use and burns up twine to fast and at $8 dollars a cartridge this this is worthless.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This trimmer is not easy to use....it is just a basic trimmer with a telescoping shaft. The shaft does not swivel for edging which I mistakenly thought it did. The line does not feed out far enough so you are not getting the benefit of the 14" cut that is advertised. You have to make several swipes to get a good trim. Will not purchase again! Way over priced for what you get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tool - Great Value Strong, powerful and durable machine for trimming and edging. Great value for the product. Trims tall weeds and grass with ease. Edges grass-line along sidewalks and Driveways, too. I recommend this B&D tool to all homeowners... Rick K.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quit after three uses; will return Worked fine for three uses then the motors would not quit when I released the trigger. Unplugged it and when plugged back in the motor would spin without pulling the trigger. Let it set int He garage for a day then tried it again. Now it won' do anything. My old Black & Decker trimmer worked for over 30 years which is the one I replaced. I will trade for a new one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk I bought last summer and it did not last the summer season. Motor smoked and suddenly died. I liked the weight and options so this summer I bought another one thinking I got a lemon. Nope! Did the same thing and suddenly smoked the motor again! Lowes gave me credit and I returned for a third one. Today the third trimmer did the same thing the other two did. Smoked and died again! Like I said a piece of pure junk.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Black + Decker Trimmer/Edger GH900, GH912 The trimmer started out doing as advertised however, the line will not feed and I smelled something burning around the electrical plug. I am going to return this unit for a replacement. I'm sure this was a faulty trimmer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Uses extreme amount of trimmer line I have an average city lot, 60', and just to edge along my sidewalk I ran out of line and had to refill. In order to edge my sidewalk and driveway which is short, I was on my 2nd refill over the original line. This uses more line than any trimmer I've ever had. I do like the design but almost took it back due to the amount of refills just to get my front done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Better Than the Red Brand The automatic line feed is significantly better than the "bump to feed" system on my previous red trimmer (you know the brand). On the red trimmer, the line fed through a U-shaped steel reinforcement to prevent wear; the top of the hole for the line feed was the screw-on plastic cap for the line spool. Over time, the cap would wear and develop a notch in the plastic, causing the line to get nicked. The line would frequently break at this weak point. That one failure mode was a constant source of frustration and why I bought the B&D. The B&D has a complete circular line feed-through reinforcement, and I have not experienced any line breakage. On the con side, this B&D trimmer seems heavier than the red one, but the motor also seems more powerful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great cordless with nice edging feature I really like this string trimmer. I was on the fence going for gas or corded and I am glad I went with this. My yard is decent size but pulling the extension cord out each time beats messing with gas, oil and all the maintenance that goes with gas trimmers. Has great power and speed but would be better with 2 string configuration. Also I would prefer to control the line feed manually with a bump than with the auto feed feature. In theory it works but when you break the line, you are at the mercy of the auto feed system to get you back to optimal line length. The big winner for me is the edging feature. The wheel it rests on is the perfect height for it and makes for a quick clean edge. Rotating is also useful for setting the angle any way you want.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Last chance This is my 3rd string trimmer. The first one would not hold the string, all ran out when used first time after filling spool. Second one the motor burned out after only a few uses. Just got the third one and used it twice; hopefully it will stand up. The only reason I purchased this third and last one was because of the price. I am a woman with not a lot of strength and cannot start a gas trimmer or handle one. If this one dies, I will hire someone to do my trimming for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Died The first two times that I used it, it worked pretty well. It's easy to handle. Down side of it is that it flies through the corals way too fast. Lastly, it died on me with just my fourth time using it. It's alright when it works but I think I may go to a battery powered or gas powered next time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing purchase The first day I used the trimmer it quit working. Now I have to deal with finding a Black & Decker authorized dealer to have it fixed. Very disappointing product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Use This was my first ever purchase of a weed trimmer and I am joining the other reviews with a positive one. I am a single female who for the first time in my life is taking care of my own yard. After living in my home for 22 years I mowed my grass and trimmed weeds for the first time this weekend! I found this trimmer to be very easy to use and light weight enough to do all of the trimming without any fatigue. It actually has more power than expected. I almost wished I'd gotten one that was not as powerful, considering my lack of experience and I got a little carried away at times and roughed up the ground. I'm sure it will just take practice. I trimmed nonstop for about an hour and the string did not get jammed one time. I'm glad my first purchase of a trimmer was this one!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is not worth it!!! Please do not waste your money on this Black and Decker. I have a very small yard and we keep it up. I used to have a gas trimmer, but since we moved my yard is alot smaller do i thought maybe a cord would work ok. The trimmer does a decent job, but i my opinion they should have NEVER called this an Edger also. The spool you can put on it is only .065. This is not enough for an edger. I have replaced the string that goes on the spool 4 times already today. Think twice about buying this Trimmer/EDGER! Terrible

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hardworking ! A yard full of 4 ft. weeds knocked down in 2 days ( took my time ). Ran this pretty hard and had my doubts but it did great. Thank you, best 34$ I've spent in a long time!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not enough power Single line fed through well enough, but it just didn't have enough muscle behind it. And I live on a small residential lot.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute junk! String has never fed correctly!! Returned a cheap junk trimmer to another store. Bought this one at Lowes for about twice the price - assuming that we were getting "Black & Decker" quality! WRONG!! Its never fed sting correctly. But when new - it at least fed a bit. I'd only have to stop every one or two minutes to manually feed more line. After sitting a couple months through last winter - we can't get anything out of it! Bought the three-pack of line spools in the hope it was just a bad spool. ANOTHER MISTAKE! The replacement spools would break almost as soon as you started using them. And they didn't feed at all!! Worse than original!! See picture below - see how much sting is still left on this spool (and this is after continuing to use it even after the spool broke)? Now, I've got a yard that badly needs edging - and a trimmer that won't do the job (even though this is just light-duty surburb yard grass). STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU STAY AWAY FROM THIS JUNK!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as good as the one it replaced I bought this low end corded trimmer to replace the 17 year old Black & Decker corded trimmer that finally gave out. Improvements from the old trimmer are that this new model is much lighter and very easy to handle and can be converted into an edger in seconds. Unfortunately, the positives stop there. The handle on this new trimmer can be adjusted by pushing in a plastic locking nut for quick and simple adjustments. Unfortunately, the handle on my trimmer does not want to keep the handle locked in position and spontaneously drops the trimmer several inches when the handle breaks free and shaves the grass or your shoe which is unsafe. Also, the guide wheel that is used for edging simply gets in the way when trimming. You cannot see how close to the edge of the area you wish to trim. Great idea, bad execution. Finally, the self feeding string is a mystery. You're just not sure when it will release additional line so at any given moment, you have a few extra inches of string that catches on the guard and flies off. That's just not safe. Overall, I wish I had my old trimmer back even though it was old and heavy. The new model simply doesn't stack up failing in several key areas keeping this trimmer less than functional at times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Impressed! This lightweight trimmer is excellent! I'm a 53 y.o grandma, and this is a must tool! The handle and guard snap right in place, so It was out of the box and working within 5 minutes! My lawn was overgrown and hadn't been edged in quite a while, so I ran this thing for over an hour and it never skipped a beat, never needed the cord pulled and did an amazing job. The previous gas trimmer we had was so heavy I couldn't use it, so I am thrilled with the performance of this trimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally got it right! I've only used it once so far, but am extremely pleased with it's performance. After years of using trimmers that I had to tap to advance the line (which sometimes snarled and eventually I had to replace broken spool), this trimmer was a pleasure to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it !! Purchased this electric weed whacked as our gas powered wouldn't start and have been through a couple of them of the past several years. I was pleasantly surprised how well this worked. Easy set up. Nice and lightweight and easy to maneuver. I used it for about 5 hours in a row cleaning up a backyard that previous owners planted various ground cover but a lot of weeds and poison ivy were present,it handled the ivy good and weeds with ease. I bought a second spool of replacement line and once I replaced it the auto feed failed to work. I verified this is the correct line for it but couldn't get it to work again. I loved that feature I just wish it didn't stop working upon replacement of spool. Otherwise this is a fantastic tool and highly recommend.
Date published: 2017-04-06
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Built to break. It is designed to break. The string length cutter will get dull, then the string wraps around the base of the rotating head. The plastic guard is much thinner at that point, so the string breaks it and winds around the motor inside, causing it to shut down. Keeping the string cutter sharp is a futile task, and once the plastic guard is broken, you might as well throw it away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best $40 bucks I ever spent After looking at my back yard and front overgrowing for a second season. I decided to take action. The local lawn care person laughed at my offer of $25 to cut my yard after he finished my neighbors. This trimmer cut my yard with 2 years of overgrowth with ease (same spool). For a row home this has plenty of power, but if you have acreage you'll need a gas trimmer. After decades of troublesome and expensive gas trimmers, I'm perfectly satisfied with this purchase.
