Laying mosaic tiles

Preparing the surface

  • 1.1Remove any accessories from the wall.
  • 1.2Clean the surface and repair any holes.

Drawing reference lines

  • 2.1Trace a horizontal line along the wall where there will be a full row of tile.
  • 2.2Trace a vertical line the size of a mosaic.
  • 2.3Install a tile finishing trim with flat head nails for a clean finish.

Spreading the adhesive

  • 3.1Mix the adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • 3.2Starting in the bottom corner, spread the adhesive on a 3' surface.
  • 3.3Work with the smooth side of the trowel at a 45° angle, making sure you can still see the reference lines.

Installing the first sheet

  • 4.1Lay the first sheet of tiles following the reference lines.
  • 4.2Place spacers at the bottom of the wall so that the mosaic isn’t directly on the moulding.

Adhering the sheet

  • 5.1To make sure the sheet is well adhered, move the sheet lightly.
  • 5.2Tap the tile with a mallet to adhere the sheets to the wall.

Continuing the installation

  • 6.1Install the second sheet and insert tile spacers in between, creating uniform joints.
  • 6.2Make sure it’s level, flat, and uniform.
  • 6.3Cover the entire surface.

Preparing the tiles for the extremities

  • 7.1Measure and cut the necessary sheets to cover the extremities.

Pro Tip

To cut the tiles, place the mosaic on a tile cutter and push (or pull, according to the model) the roller along the line.

Cleaning adhesive residues

  • 8.1Clean the adhesive residues with a humid sponge.
  • 8.2Wait 1 to 2 days before applying the grout.

Applying the grout

  • 9.1Mix the grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • 9.2Remove the spacers and dampen the surface with clean water.
  • 9.3Hold the rubber trowel at a 45° angle and apply the grout evenly in the cracks.
  • 9.4Apply the grout in smaller sections.
  • 9.5Remove excess as you go.
  • 9.6Clean the surface with a wet sponge, moving diagonally.

Pro Tip

Do not apply grout in cracks that separate the tile from another material (the finishing trim, for example.) Do not use too much water while cleaning the grout, it’ll be diluted otherwise.

Finishing the installation

  • 10.1Apply grout sealer to the joints.
  • 10.2Wait around 10 days, then caulk the expansion joints with silicone sealer.
