Refrigerator: choosing the right one without getting cold feet.

The refrigerator is the appliance you use the most in your home. It’s open from morning to night, it feeds you and is loyal for at least ten years. You might as well select the right one…one, two, three, fridge!

Buying criteria for a refrigerator
  1. Energy consumption
refrigerator can represent up to 15% of your electricity bill. Also opt for an ENERGY STAR certified appliance. If possible, aim for 46 kWh and less per year for reasonable usage.
  2. Available space
Measure the space you have to avoid any bad surprise when you install your appliance after delivery. If we mention it, it’s because too many people forget this step!
  3. Electrical socket
Make sure you have an electrical socket near your future refrigerator in the space you planned to install it. If no other area is possible, think about installing an electrical socket. Using extension cord is not ideal with such a big appliance.
  4. Water inlet
Some refrigerators offer all sorts of features like ice chips and filtered water. Can your new appliance connect to the water inlet easily?

Pro Tip

The ideal temperature for a refrigerator is 4 °C. For the freezer, it’s  -18 °C. It allows you to keep your food fresh and your electricity bill modest. General rule: for every degree less, the energy consumption goes up by 5 % !

How can I reduce the energy consumption of my refrigerator?

Distance your refrigerator from the oven, the dishwasher and any other source of heat. The difference of temperature inside and outside the refrigerator has a direct impact on its energy consumption.
Size of the refrigerator
Not all kitchens can accommodate any refrigerator model. Therefore, it’s especially important to measure the space where you want to install your appliance. As an indicator, we prepared this chart to spare you from buying the wrong type for your home.
