Who can qualify?
Canadian homeowners, no matter where they reside, can take part in this initiative. It is important to know that only one homeowner per home can apply. Amongst other things, it is mandatory to provide proof of ownership along with the property tax invoice number (number can be found in your municipal property documents) and to prove that this property is the owner's main residence - with a driver's license or a government-issued ID with the address.

Here is the list of styles of properties that are potentially eligible for government grant:
• Single and semi-detached houses
• Row housing
• Townhomes
• All-season cottages
• Mobile homes on a permanent foundation
• Permanently-moored floating homes
• Mixed use buildings (residential portion only)
• Small multi-unit residential building of three stories or less with a footprint of 600 m² or less

And here is also a list of some styles of properties that are not eligible for the government grant:
• New homes
• Multi-unit residential buildings that are over three stories or over 600 m² in footprint

Before you start renovating your home, it is essential to complete an assessment with a NRCan registered energy efficiency advisor. Registration is done online using the government grant website.

A new EnerGuide assessment is necessary if yours was completed before April 1, 2020.

If your EnerGuide evaluation was completed between April 1 and November 30, 2020, it is valid and it can be used for the grant program, but the costs related to this evaluation cannot be submitted for reimbursement. The residential work must have been completed by December 1, 2020 or afterwards and the products must be on the list of eligible and recommended products in your advisor's report.

If your assessment was completed after December 1, 2020, the costs related to it and to the work are eligible for reimbursement if you have completed at least one eligible and recommended retrofit from the report from your energy advisor.

Costs related to the evaluation of your home
The evaluation prices differ due to several factors. It could be affected by your house’s region, exact location (land) or size. The total amount to which you are entitled for is a maximum of $600, for the two assessments combined. With that being said, the reimbursement may not cover the full cost of these evaluations.

Specific instructions for Quebec residents
Residents of Quebec need to apply directly through the Rénoclimat program. The financial assistance offered by the Rénoclimat program will be adjusted for each participant according to the renovations carried out and the amount offered by the federal program. It is important to keep in mind that financial assistance amounts are not cumulative inside the same measure.

Rénoclimat program participants who received an evaluation before May 27, 2021, may be eligible for the federal program for eligible renovations carried out since December 1, 2020. Services Canada will contact eligible participants to inform them of the procedure to follow.

Once you get your EnerGuide evaluation, you can review it, read the recommendations, and choose the work that fits your budget and the plans and ideas you had in mind.

Don’t forget that you will need to complete at least one renovation that is both eligible and recommended by your advisor.

Once the renovations are completed, you can begin the reimbursement process for a part of the work that was done on your home.

To optimize the reimbursement, you need to do an evaluation once the work is completed. When you book your evaluation, you must provide all requested documents online or by mail. During the evaluation, your energy advisor will indicate how much energy was saved as well as his recommendation on how much you should get for your reimbursement.

To make sure you get your reimbursement, you must submit receipts for both of your evaluations as well as receipts and invoices for all products purchased and all installation costs. You need to keep copies of all documents for 7 years, which means until March 31, 2028. You should also know that federal grants, including any reimbursements received as part of this initiative, are not taxable and do not need to be reported as income.

Specific instructions for Quebec residents
If you performed at least one retrofit that was both recommended by your energy advisor under Rénoclimat and eligible under the Canada Greener Homes Grant, NRCan will contact you directly about any potential additional grants.

Once you have entered your total grant amount (you will receive an email from the government), your payment will be mailed to you in the form of a check from the government.

The last step consists of an analysis of your file by the program officers. They will review the work, the recommendations, and the grant amount. Once everything is completed, you will receive an invitation to go into the portal of the government to confirm the total grant amount to receive your refund.
