Description

Wood finish is an oil-based wood stain that provides long-lasting wood tone colour. It penetrates deep into the pores to seal and protect the wood. Can be used to enhance any bare or stripped wood surface. It is ideal for staining furniture, cabinets, doors, trim, molding, and hardwood floors.

I am wondering if natural stain on cherry followed by polyurethane would tone down the strong red colour that results from polyurethane varnish alone on the wood.

Thank you for your question. The stain would need to be applied to bare wood. The currently polyurethane would need to be removed prior to staining. Regards, Linda @ Minwax Customer Support

Rated 1 out of 5 by jmsanders from New Formula Not Good I am a wood worker and have used and depended on minwax stains. About a month ago I noticed the labels changing and was forced to buy as that was all that’s left. The new formula may dry quicker but now 3 times with 3 different colors and 3 customers, the color is too light and have had to go other routes. The stain is too thin and if I have to buy 3 times as much to get the same effect as 1 coat of old formula, I’ve lost time in applying and lost money because new formula is thinner and lighter but costs the same. Not a fan of the new formula and hope to get some refunds.

Rated 1 out of 5 by janmcc from Has This Product been Changed? I have been mixing my own stain color for the last 15 years to match aged knotty pine in my cabin. Three parts natural, one part English chestnut worked beautifully and let the wood grain show through. Now, with the cans marked "semi-transparent, Dries in two hours" it goes on VERY orange and covers the wood grain like paint. Totally ruined a project trying to match the previous mixture. And yes, I set a timer and mixed it with a paint stirrer for ten minutes. I have never wiped it off in the past and wood grain showed perfectly. No idea how I will deal this, may have to switch the entire project to paint.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Ms South from Minwax Red mahogany stain What happened to the formulation of the red mahogany stain? I had used this stain for years and never had a problem. The last two cans I purchased have been extremely more brown almost more a walnut shade with very little red tint. I am very disappointed. Never had a problem until now. I noticed someone else had the same issue with the red oak stain. I think your quality control department needs to recheck their formula. Thank goodness I had an older can of leftover stain red mahogany to add more red tones to my project. And don't say I didn't mix it well. That is not the issue. Thanks for your attention to this issue

Rated 5 out of 5 by LinceyP from Reliable stains [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use the Minwax brand anytime I need an oil based stain. They give consistent results, are easy to apply and soak right in. It’s also very forgiving if liquid stain drips on the project or is applied on unevenly at first, it won’t blotch. When the excess is wiped off at the end, the color is even. A single coat is plenty for a lot of projects but I sometimes apply a second one to darken the final color. The latest color I’ve tried is the honey color. I’ve used it to stain pine wood rounds that will be made into decorative wall signs. The color was true to the reference shown on the can.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using Minwax® Wood Finish on my wood working products for many years and I absolutely love using it. It is east to use and really does bring out the beauty of my wood. this time I used it with Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner and I can honestly say I have never had a better result on Pine. This product applies easily, dries quickly and looks amazing, as long as you follow the instructions given. I will never use a different brand of wood finish again. This is a fantastic product that I thoroughly recommend to others and as I said previously, I will never use another brand again.

Last winter I decided to start refinishing some interior doors. I completed five so far and got fantastic results using Min wax pre stain conditioner, Min wax Wood Stain and of course Min wax Polyurethane. Mmm. The wood stain brought out all the natural grain in the doors and then 3 liberal coats of Min wax gloss polyurethane. OMG, I Can see my reflection in the finish. I want to emphatically state for the record that I am an amateur wood worker and just followed the instructions on the product labels. To close my review Min wax has opened up a whole new world of restoration projects around my home. Over this past spring I began taking down all of the bannisters and have completed restoration on 7 of 8 and they look fantastic and then stripped and refinished the bar top in my basement. Thank you for creating some amazing products for a laymen wood enthusiast. Drew Modic

The furniture we paint and stain for our customers get nothing but the best! When used correctly with the minwax pre-stain the product shows an even color throughout the project

We always go back to Minwax stains for several reasons. The stain is easy to work with, goes on evenly and clean up is a breeze. From batch to batch the color does not change which is very important to us. When you show your client a stain board, you want the stain you use to match what they want. Minwax stains work well in our sprayer as well, some stains don't. To sum up, Minwax is easy to work with and consistent. We are through testing other brands.
