What conditioner should I use for this satin?

Asked by: Shane030716
Hello. We offer an oil-based and water-based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner products. However, they are meant for use underneath our stains, not under our protective finishes. However, if you are using our Performance Series Fast-Dry Varnish, use our Performance Series Sanding Sealer. We don't offer sealers for use underneath our other protective finishes. Stain is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 121.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Something Different [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Hello, I was walking through the store when I noticed this product. What you need to know is how this stuff works. It is water based and functions similar to a normal stain in terms of applying it. You should get some type of clear coat though as it seems a little easy to fade or remove. Also, I had a hard time figuring out how to get color into this and I realized you need to buy this clear stain and take it to the paint counter. Tell them the color you want and they will tint the stain with that. It applies easily and does not stay on your hands if you make a mess for very long since it is water based.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Stain [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is pretty much watered down acrylic paint. I used this on a guitar and it's completely ruined. None of the grain shows through, its tacky, and its unforgiving. The only saving grace is that because it isnt stain, it doesn't soak into the wood and all I had to do is remove all my shou sugi ban burning work and sand it back down to normal wood. Great. Not clear, not worth it, and not stain. If I wanted the effect this gave to my wood I would've just painted it. (photo is while I'm trying to sand off the stain)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results Minwax recently changed their color selection and the blue was very intense. The paint tech at Lowes worked with us and added some white to give us a less saturated color. The blue line shelves are really beautiful and just what my husband was going for. He brushed and then wiped, but don't leave it on too long before wiping or even in humid central Tx it will dry before you expect! He did apply a satin clear coat to finish and its great

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Pretty horrible Like another reviewer stated this stuff is highly cantankerous and honestly it almost ruined a very extensive project had I not put a plan B into effect. It dries quickly and gunks up making it difficult to remove. Then after it cakes up and clings to the wood it isn't coming off which at that point your project is ruined. I'm an accomplished furniture maker and rarely do I come across a product that can so quickly botch hours and hours of hard work without being able to salvage the project. Talk about sabotage in a can this stuff is it. I give it two stars only because I was able to get a decent look just once on a small board.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't try this product I tried out the coffee tint for a table I'm refinishing. I bought the water based pre-stain wood conditioner to use as well because its supposed to help with more even stain absorption. I followed the directions on the can for both products and had terrible results. I first tried applying the stain with a rag and had so many uneven spots and it looked terrible. I switched to a brush and that helped but still had issues with even coloring. I was so dissatisfied I took the product back to Lowe's and they let me return it. I re-sanded the table and went with an oil based stain like I normally use and had great results. This product is not worth a try, stick with oil based stains.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from the ultimate test...floors! I decided to go all water-based on my floor refinishing. I knew the can said not recommended for floors, but I realized it was because applying it to a huge area is problematic, because it dries so fast. I've got a lot of experience staining, so I knew the trick is putting it on as dry as I can. Wow, this stuff worked super. I would have given it five stars, but it does tend to blotch and I had to fight that performance flaw. But, the fact that it dries fast enough to walk on it within a floor application meant it was so forgiving! A quart of it is now under a gallon of water based poly in a 12x12 room and the room looks great. the stain didn't wash up into the poly, it dried so wonderfully fast, and I was walking on a finished floor eight hours after I finished wiping down the sanded wood.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Minwax tintable stain This is not like oil base stain. One must prepare to wipe the residual stain from the surface. Also must be very careful about the direction when wiping off your work. Use what you may but I use generous amounts of paper towels. Be very careful of the direction when wiping plywood. I have found that high humidity is a plus. Over lapping th stain can also be a problem

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unexpected Results I thought using a water based product would make staining easier. Not even close! This product goes on thick and does not quickly absorb. However, it does quickly dry and that creates a streaky mess. I tried to wipe it down with a water soaked cloth, but it did not thin the stain, it just made it into gunk and clotted up. I was unable to get a semi uniform finish. Finally, I had to strip the water-based stain completely away. I had to trash a brand new can of stain. Unless you want a color, such as green, blue, or red, you are better off with an oil based stain. I originally wanted an Espresso finish, so I used a Minwax oil base stain and got almost the same color result. Much easier to apply and then I used a spray polyurethane for an easy finish.
