Rated 2 out of 5 by Ipoopedtoday from Good in theory, poor in execution. I have a pair of patio shields. Neither stay lit for more than a few minutes. One worked fine for about 2 hours, the other one wouldn't stay lit straight out of the box. Tried different (and new) fuel cells, various temperatures, well within specified temperature and altitude. They won't even stay lit in my enclosed work shop. A friend has one (a few years old) it works great (and definitely makes a difference in the number of mosquitoes present). Either I got a pair of lemons (bought from diff stores a month apart) or they have some issues with the current batch of ones they have out right now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by cane from Amazing results A friend told me about the Thermacell when I told her I can hardly go outside in my garden anymore. I am such a mosquito magnet! I was skeptical but ordered it because I'm willing to try anything. As soon as it arrived, I set it up out on the patio and went back inside for 10-15 minutes to allow it time to create my "dome of protection". I was able to sit out on my patio for 2 hours and came in completely unbitten. It was amazing! I've used it several times since with the same result. My sister just ordered one today after I told her about my experience. She can't wait for it to arrive!

The patio shield mosquito protector did a great job keeping away the nasty mosquitoes that are always drawn to me, eating me alive as I sit outside on my camper patio. The amount of mosquitoes decreased tremendously making it so much nicer for me to be able to sit out without having to be sprayed from head to toe with repellent. Although a rogue one or two would get me, this product decreased the presence of the several dozen that usually are out there attacking me. Living in hot, humid Florida, this thermacell is a must have! Thank you for making it more enjoyable for me to sit outside!

Bought one for my cousin during the Calgary Stampede, based on a friend's recommendation, and it worked 100% after being eaten alive the evening before! Bought 2 more for myself and LOVE them. No more irritating visits on my deck next to the pond. I had no problem registering them in Canada. If it is windy, it has to be upwind, but you will get less coverage. Impossible for mosquitos to be landing on the device, as the repellent works like a charm, and the top gets quite hot. I think some people forget to read the instructions, and don't know how to use it! I highly recommend it!

I had tried numerous different insect repellants hoping they would be effective against No-See-Ums. Most of them did not work. Some worked very short term & only on me & not the people around me since it was usually a spray that I put on myself. BUT then I found Thermacell. All of their products to keep mosquitos and No-See-Ums away. Not only do they work but they do so for several hours before needing the mat or butane cartridge replaced. And it works for a large area without the need to spray anything on your body. These new Patio Shields work the same as the original Thermacells but the Patio Shields look nicer. I use it at home & when camping.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Mosquito bitten12 from Doesn’t work as advertised I recently bought one of these in hopes that it would help combat the mosquitoes that seem to live my apartment patio. I decided to try it without the candles and sprays to get a good test and feel for the device. I made sure the kid was off, the gas was on tight, that I seen the orange glow and the mat was fresh and blue. I waited the suggested 15 minutes on a calm day (no wind) before walking outside. It took me about 20 minutes of being a buffet for those little blood sucking vampires before I realized that I wasted $30-$40 on this unit and the refill pads and fuel. lol

Rated 5 out of 5 by Cathy from AMAZING I bought this a couple months ago and thought that I'd take a chance - that it might end up with all my other ineffective repellents - in the trash - but was tired of being eaten alive by mosquitoes so it was worth a chance. I AM SO GLAD I DID! I carry this little bugger with me every where I go. I NEVER has mosquito bites when I use this. I just bought a huge pack of refills so I'm prepared for the rest of the season. I even sent one to a friend who complained she could not get any use of her patio because of mosquitoes. She was thrilled with it too.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MsMo from Not Quite What We Expected But Will Try Again I was really pumped to give this a try especially for my youngest who can't really enjoy the outdoors because he is a bit allergic to mosquitoes. We got it set up nice and high, made sure everything was done correct and that is stayed lit (which it did), once going it worked to take away a few mosquitoes but we were still getting bit up and could not really enjoy like we thought we'd be able to. The nights have been really cold and stormy so on the next nice evening we will give it another go, see what happens and maybe have a chance to update our score.

The unit would click, but I had to do it over and over and it still would not light. I called for help, and they sent me a free replacement. One of the units will start after many many tries to light, and the other will not start at all. I like that the thermacell is pretty effective at keeping mosquitos away, but it is so hard to light that I can't count on being able to use it. The patio shield seems like a great insect repeller with poor execution on the device (unless I just got two duds).

On opening the box we noticed that there was no cover for the thermacell as indicated in the video. How do we get them. I think they would be necessary so that your unit would not get wet in bad weather. I know of others who have bought the same unit and they have a cover. Please inform me on where I can get these covers. I want the covers and Canadian Tire told me they received it this way, i do we get them if i would have known i would have not bought this ones

Rated 2 out of 5 by atxjin from Good feature set, but didn't repel mosquitos. Disclosure: Thermacell sent this product to me in return for an honest review. I paid for shipping. Otherwise, I received what looked to be a retail boxed product. The short: Overall, the new Patio Shield had a lot of thought put into the industrial design. Unfortunately, the mosquito repellency did not work for me here in Austin, Texas. Ultimately, that's what matters for a mosquito repeller. The long: I own the MR150 portable repeller from Thermacell. I've tried using it during hunting, camping, and on the patio, but similar to the Patio Shield, I still had mosquitos literally fly over and past the heated allethrin pad and bite me. There's definitely possibility Central Texas mosquitos have developed an immunity to allethrin; I don't know. I know many people who swear by Thermacell, so it obviously has to work to some capacity, but it hasn't worked well for me. Ultimately, this is the reason for the low score I'm giving this product. Disregarding the effectiveness of the mosquito repellency, the physical product is well designed. The top cover (lid): One of the best features is the removable top cover. The problem with the blue allethrin pads are that they dry out when sitting out. The Patio Shield's cover helps to alleviate this. But the cover is not fully sealed, so the pad will still eventually dry out. When the Patio Shield is in use, you can lay this cover upside down and seat the Patio Shield upright inside the concave space. An etching around the Patio Shield's base will help to indicate when it has seated level inside the lid, but it does not securely clip in and so can still be easily knocked over. Repeller pad storage: Another great feature is a storage space beneath and inside the Patio Shield where you can store additional unopened alletrhin pads. There are four pairs of narrow plastic protrusions where a single unopened pad can be wedged in and held out of sight. The space is small, so if you'd need some smaller dextrous fingers to get them in there. Would be easier if the butane cartridge is not installed, but having all four pad holders filled may make screwing in the butane cartridge difficult. Butane ignition check portal: The clear window to check whether the butane is lit or not is located at the top edge of the Patio Shield's cylinder shape and is large enough to make checking for the pad heater being lit is easy. Butane flow and ignition switch: This is my least favorite part of the design. While the rotary switch at the bottom of the Patio Shield is aesthetically nice, it has the same smooth slippery plastic as the rest of the product. Even with the two finger divots molded into the rotary switch, gripping and twisting this switch can be tricky if using the design queues to only use your thumb and forefinger. You'll have better luck by laying the base of the Patio Shield fully into your palm and place as much of your hand's surface area and grip onto the rotary switch. If you have weak hand strength or suffer from arthritis, igniting the butane on the Patio Shield could prove difficult. Thermacell could add some grippy grooves or stippling in their next revision of the product to help with this. In summary, it's a well designed product. I just wish it repelled mosquitos here in Central Texas.

There were 5 people hanging out around it and no one was bothered by mosquitos! We can see from the pad that we have more time left to use it before it turns all white. We are very impressed and happy with this device. We were unaware prior to getting this that our friends up in Northern Maine swear by their Thermacell for all their outdoor summer activities! Don't hesitate to purchase one and give it a try!

I don’t want to use harsh chemicals or candles with little to no results. I read reviews on this and thought I’d give it a try, I mean it’s guaranteed so what could it hurt? I am beyond shocked and so thrilled at how well this works! I turned it on and waited a few minutes for it to work as directed and couldn’t believe I could sit outside and read and not be attacked! Then again this afternoon I went outside to read and had a few mosquitos bite me. I turned it on and within just a couple of minutes they were all gone! If you’re debating whether or not to get this, debate no more!! Run to a store right now and get it, you won’t be disappointed!

I also bought a refill kit at the same time. My Patio Sheild sat on my patio waiting for its first run. Then Hurricane Florence struck NC. Life was put on hold for a couple of weeks, but not for the mosquitoes. It has become a plague of nearly Biblical proportions in NC. Well tonight I brought my Patio Sheild to my sons baseball practice under the lights. Not one bite and I’ve been here for about an hour. Others are spraying Deet like sunscreen on the beach. I got my Patio Sheild in the cup holder of my folding chair. I’m very impressed. The little bloodsuckers fly by but never land. Great job. Thanks for such a wonderful product. Never stop selling the refills.

In Alberta, Canada our mosquitoes are relentless (day or night). It takes less than 5 min from turning on the Thermacell and you can actually see the mosquitoes come in, hover and leave! In the very worst of mosquitoes I've needed to use 2 of these thermacells for complete protection! As you'd expect, if its windy the Thermacell isn't as effective. I highly recommend this product!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by GHOMF from Mosquitoes? Where? My daughter decided to have a sleep-over in a tent for her recent birthday. In Florida. So, it was like advertising an all-you-can-eat buffet for the ever-present mosquito population. So, I decided to give the patio shield a trial run out next to the tent. The results were better than I had hoped. As a mostly lifelong resident of the FL, I am somewhat cynical about anything that claims to drive off the pests, but the Patio Shield lived up to its name (even if it wasn't technically deployed on a patio). The girls reported no sightings, or bitings, for the whole time they were out - which was, admittedly, slightly shirt of being all night. I will trot this out next time I'm grilling outside to give it another shakedown, but preliminary tests do leave me optimistic.

I have been trying this out on my good sized porch for about 2 weeks now. Although it is not full blown mosquito time, it has done a beautiful job with keeping the ones that are out away. I cant wait to see what this thing is made of when you cant fight those darn things off of ya. It was easy to use and not an eye sore. I will be getting back with yall when I know a little bit more. I would recommend this for sure, for now :)

I have a beautiful home with a huge porch that I could never enjoy because of all the mosquitos and other similar nuisance bugs. I saw this product demonstrated on The Today Show and could not resist trying it. I am AMAZED at how easy it is to use and how well it works! I have been out on my porch for morning coffee, an evening glass of wine, even dinner. All totally bug free! No smoke, no odor - it just works exactly as described. Best investment I could have made.

The mosquitoes here are not normal mosquitoes they are teenage mutant ninja mosquitoes!! I have spent so much money on every kind of torch fuel, citronella candle, citronella incense, citronella plant, and bug spray just the works and none of them have worked they will bite you through bug spray and through anything you can throw at them. THIS is the only thing that keeps them away and lets us enjoy the outdoors as a family!

I have other lantern products which I am happy with but wanted to have something to set on a table by pool chairs. Product worked well even with my Florida mosquitoes and is heavy enough they can't fly off with it. Colors are great and fit in with the sunshine and decor. I like the cap feature that I can put on after use to avoid rain/sprinkler damage. The cap closes the unit up nicely. But, I still don't recommend taking it with you on a pool float though!! :-)

If you've had a Thermacell before, it's pretty much the same, and uses the same consumables, although the instructions could be a bit more detailed on some things like using the lid for the base, or the holding slots for extra mats inside the body by the butane tank. There's no mention of either of those in the instructions. Functionally, the Patio Shield is easy to use - screw in the tank and twist the body to ignite. Simples. It seems to work fine sitting on just the bottom of the body without the cap under it. With or without the cap, it isn't great on uneven ground, but is fine on finished surfaces (floors, railings, etc). My first Thermacell was one of the portable units, and I like this one just as much if not more.

The Thermacell I have have always been solid.The features are simple and effective. I also like the internal storage for the mats! I've got some buddies that are amazed and stated they got to have one or more. Here in Louisiana we can be attacked with mosquitoes 8 months out of the year. Thanks for the attractive, functional design. I've got several of the handheld, two of the lanterns, and now the porch shield.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Barry from Love it but the halo light will no longer come on I have been using the halo version of the Thermacell product for a couple years. It works great and as advertised. This year when I decided it as time to start using it again so I loaded it with four new fuel cartridges and new batteries. The unit halo light would not come on. I thought the unit was failing but I tried it again anyway. It still works but the halo light will not come on. I use the light as a reminder to turn it off. Is there anything I can do to correct the halo light?

No matter where we set it up on our front steps area or back deck we still seemed to get bit. Not just a few I mean a lot! Not impressed at all for the amount the refills cost. Didn’t want to give up so bought the earth scent ones to see if they worked better and no luck. For someone like myself that is allergic to mosquitos I was hoping for a product that actually helped.

Nobody put on any bug spray because we wanted to see if this thing really works.... Well... After the first fifteen minutes or so, the mosquitos just went away... And they didn't come back!!! The only bites we had were the ones we got before we turned it on! It will definately be getting another one or two to space around our deck and cabana.!

I received a defective unit, contacted Thermacell and they were very prompt in their reply. They sent me a replacement, also very promptly, and all is good. Now for the Patio Shield. It seems to work well. My wife and her elderly mother like to sit on our back porch in the evening when mosquitos are at their worst. They've both said they are not having any issues with mosquitos, and for reference we live just north of Houston, TX USA where it is hot, humid, and a mosquito haven. I have not yet had the opportunity to see for myself but, their report is very positive. My reasons for only 4 stars (and I would give 4.5 if possible) is because of the fairly high cost of the butane cartridges, and because an item has to really impress me to get 5.

My property is in the woods, with a natural stream running through we have tons of mosquito making it miserable to enjoy sitting outside that is until now using this wonderful little product always me to sit out on my deck without one mosquito bite! I do prefer this product over the Radius Zone Mosquito Repellent - Gen 2.0 for me this worked better than the zone

I was so delighted because I just moved to Florida and I really have been battling mosquitoes being I don't Have a screen door at this time . I put it outside on my porch and I like the fact that it's very quiet. The instruction diagrams were very easy To follow. I like it you don't have to plug it in or use a flame. I will definitely be purchasing more of theperiod I like that it came in different colors when I looked in the website.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Misti from Lightweight I was so grateful and surprised that this doesn’t require batteries to use. It’s extremely lightweight and easy to carry anywhere you would like to. My kids like to play in the yard during evening hours and are always getting bit by mosquitoes. This helped keep them away. We loved that it was scent free and didn’t have a continuous misting spray go everywhere. It is very quiet and makes no noise. It didn’t last as long as the box says it does. That’s the only negative.
