Varnish - Polyurethane Varnish is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 163.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product for furniture refinishing We had sanded down two old pieces of furniture, one was a kitchen table. After applying a stain we used the Minwax product as the final finish. We ultimately applied three coats. Eventhough we used a brush the finish was very even and beautiful. Only recommendations is to use a good brush and apply quickly and move furniture from side to side to help spread evenly. I applied when the garage temperature was above 85 which made the working time pretty short. If possible apply at cooler temps. Final product is beautiful. First project my son worked on with me. I would highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy application [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Just refinished a antique bar..used Minwax stain first then sanded with 300grit sandpaper...I applied my first coat of the Minwax poly product...was amazed at how easy the application was (used 2 inch paintbrush). I then lightly sanded again with 300 grit paper and applied the second coat. After drying, I sanded lightly with 400 grit and applied a third coat. After drying, I wiped with 000 steel wool, cleaned with spirits then applied a fourth coat. The finished product looks like a professional re-do. I am extremely pleased with this product and will use it again for my next project

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Minwax Polyurethane Minwax poly does an excellent job of bringing a bright finish to almost any project. If you have a project where you can apply it in the horizontal position, I've found you can lay a good layer on with a foam brush and it will "float" to a smooth finish. Just make sure you don't miss any spots on your work piece while you are applying it. After the first coat, I sand it lightly with 320 sandpaper, tack cloth it, then do two more applications. My only complaint with the product is if you don't use it for a matter of months and you only have say 50% left in the can, the poly will "skim over" and form a thick layer on top and then it will be no good and you'll have to purchase more for your next project. All the projects shown below were made out of oak (with no stains) and then 3 coats of Minwax Polyurethane Clear Semi-Gloss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Brush-On Poly If you want a polyurethane, this one is EXCELLENT in terms of results. It is very easy to work with, as you have enough time to spread it in an area before it begins getting tacky. It also has virtually no odor. I worked on a flat surface (a door laid on saw horses) and not vertical. This is a thin product that will probably run if painted too thick on a vertical surface. I kept my coat thin and got beautiful results. I used a natural brush and found that if I pushed too hard, tiny bubbles were formed. No problem. I just GENTLY brushed the bristles back over the area and it took out all the bubbles - all before it began setting up in that area. It does take a few hours to FULLY set up, but it is so much easier to work with than brush on lacquer (which would set up in 15 minutes or so). The surface sets up quickly enough that nothing in the air stuck to the surface - a big plus over standard brush-on poly vs. this quicker version. My only criticism is the time it takes to fully set up, but it is what it is. Lacquer products set up more quickly, but the reason they can do that is they have more caustic chemicals in them that cause it to do that, and along with that comes the lacquer going sticky on you before you have fully blended the area you are working on and the fumes of lacquer. I have worked with both and always wear a complete safety mask with the breathing filters when using lacquer, but I didn't wear any mask with this polyurethane product. Caution Reminder: Never mix using a lacquer product and a poly product on the same project. You might be tempted to use a spray lacquer to cure stain before moving on to the next step, but once you've begun with lacquer, you should continue with lacquer. The two products don't mix and you will have surface issues. Lacquer over poly causes the poly below to crackle and bubble. Poly over lacquer does not adhere very well and might chip or flake off in time. We put tape on a door with that combination and it pulled the top coat of poly right off the under coat of spray lacquer. Lesson learned. In the poly group, this is an EXCELLENT product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from minwax polyurethane Minwax products have never let me down so I trust it. Thought about using the polyshade but the reviews show it is to good to actually work so I went with the old reliable. I hate the sanding between the coats but its worth the finished look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth Polyurethane [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The key is a homemade wiping pad using pantyhose. Prepare a wiping rag by using pieces from an old cotton tee shirt folded and stuffed into the toe of pantyhose then tie the pantyhose in a knot and cutoff like a staining pad. I know how this sounds but it does work. The pantyhose keeps the cotton from leaving lint in the polyurethane and smoothes the polyurethane. Having used many polyurethanes I prefer oil based polyurethane for a smooth durable finish. There are as many ways to apply polyurethane but I have found this one that works for even for the novice. First sand and prepare the item then vacuum the surface, wipe with damp mineral spirits rag, and finally wipe with your hand. The oil in your hand is great for the final pass. I have used with diluted oil based polyurethane and straight oil based polyurethane with great results. If you are using a fast-drying polyurethane then I would recommend diluting it slightly with mineral spirits. Use your homemade pad dipped in polyurethane and rub into the wood then go back with long strokes. The results will be a thin smooth finish. This will take a few more coats than brushing but it will be worth the effort.
