Do I need a water softener with this system or does this do both?

This unit does not soften water (remove dissolved minerals). You would need to purchase a water softener.

We couldn't drink the tap water, and showering was uncomfortable due to the strong chlorine smell. We were skeptical that this inexpensive unit would make a noticeable difference but thought to give it a try after pricing several expensive water filter companies. You probably know which ones I'm referring to. However, after 1 week, we were believers. We no longer smell the chlorine and the taste have improved significantly. I can't imagine the super expensive units would be much better. Can't comment on the durability yet, but so far this is an excellent value.

My tub & toilet was always rust color, my dishes,glasses and silverware were alway's spotted & doing laundry my whites would always turn a tan color. If I would fill the sink with water it would be brown in color. The first day we put the Whirlpool filter & Whirlpool water softener in our water was crystal clear. Its only been a few days and now we can drink our water, we don't have to buy bottled water. I was going through 2-3 filters a week before and now, none. This has been amazing so fa & It only took a few hours to install

It only took me a couple of hours to install, I am a slow worker. I could have had it done in 30 minutes to an hour if I was a little more capable. This filter has turned my well water (that was with a water softener) that turned my appliances yellow from the iron to water that tastes like bottled water. I can not give a high enough recommendation for this filter. I have been so happy that I will probably buy another just to have it sitting around for when this one needs to be replaced. To top it all off this unit doesn't have any maintenance. It takes care of itself. Perfect!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Laoster from Works Great! & will never have to buy filter again So this whole filter is working great water feels and taste better then the old system we had. I also bought the 33k water softner to go with it. Original owner paid about $4 k for the prior system and I had to add 2 bags of salt every month with only having silky water few days off and on. The 2 whirlpool products together give us soft velvety water every minute of each day so far, and it was so easy for me to install myself. Also it's great knowing that I won't ever have to change the filter just the usual adding salt but at the rate this softener is going it seems like I wont have to add salt for 3 months or longer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Smith from Did not last long.... I am disappointed in this product. I will admit it was easy to install and does come in a tight package (small footprint). It does promise a lot of benefits. I believe it did work for about two months, and did help improve the water. BUT, in month 3, it broke. I am getting an error message that the motor already burned out. So this was a lovely $300 waste of money. If they can get this thing to last, I would try it again, because I do like the technology. I just can’t waste another $300 to have a motor crash on me so soon. I don’t expect the product to last for 10 years, but 2 or 3 years would have been nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Fireguy from Installed this 2 days ago due to cloudy well water After purchasing a new home in NC that had a basic whole house cartridge filter and on well water, I quickly learned that the cartridge filter was orange only 2 days after replacing it. Clearly that wasn't going to cut it! Knowing I didn't have hard or rusty water I thought I would give this a try to eliminate the need and cost of constant cartridge replacement. By the way, even with a clean cartridge my water was discolored. After installing this........ Wow! Immediate difference in the water. Very clear water and very pleased. We will see how the life expectancy is but so far so good.

No more rust or iron taste. We have been buying drinking water for years, but no more. We can drink the water right out of the tap. The installation was not bad once I got all the stuff I needed together. I was surprised at how little space the filter takes. I did not sacrifice any space. I was able to put the unit right next to the existing pipe work. worked beautifully. I would highly recommend this little unit. Works very well. Well worth the money!

Depending on your personal skills, you might want to have a plumber install it, but the installation is straightforward and should pose no problem if care is taken and good plumbing practices and the instructions are followed. The filter works very well and is pretty much a "set and forget" item since routine maintenance is not required. My water quality is much better now with the objectionable sediment and odor being gone. This filter was considerably less expensive than others on the market, and as long as it provides a reasonable lifetime it will be one of the best purchases that I've made in a long time!
