Stud Finder "L40" is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 138.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sufficient for my needs I bought this today to hang up some shelves in my garage. After using it all day, and placing shelves on every wall in my garage, it only had two incorrect readings, and it was within 1/2 inch both times. I would advise if you use this to start on one side, mark where it signals that it has found a stud, then go from the other side and mark that point. Finally, I split the difference and used that middle mark for my stud, and this was at least 95% effective. Don't expect miracles from this product as it seems very lightweight, but it should get the job done for the most part. Can't comment on how well it picks up electric lines, as I had no need for this feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to use This stud finder has a red laser arrow that lights up when the edge of the stud is located. With the "v" edge and the arrow, it makes marking edges simple and accurate. It's a little tricky getting used to it -- you have to give it a second to register when you place it on the wall and then slowly move it to the left or right so it can locate the stud. It is very good about indicating when electrical wires are present, which is always important. Sometimes it beeps and the lights flash like it can't register correctly. When this occurs take your finger off of the button and let it reset. If that doesn't work, simply remove the battery and reinsert. Highly impressed with this tool!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Apparently everything is a stud Just rocked around our fireplace and trying to install the wood mantel surround. Obviously I want to have it attached to studs for stability, but apparently the wall either has moving studs or is one entire stud. The finder is functioning in one of 3 ways. I am either constantly having to remove the battery and put it back in to reset the finder as it gets stuck in "stud found" mode; When it doesn't get stuck, it shows there is a stud then goes off and when I go back over the same spot the stud disappears; or it just blinks and beeps as you go over the wall. I even just for giggles ran it across my window and guess what... an invisible stud is in the pane of glass.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy a better one I was in Lowes looking for a stud finder and this seemed like a good deal (next one up was $50). So I bought it without looking at the reviews. Bad choice. It seems easy to use but is worthless. Found 12 different stud locations on the same 4'x4' space of wall. I would mark a stud location then measure again and the stud disappeared. I had no less then 12 "studs" marked all over the wall. After what seemed like a true stud finding (3 successful measures), I drilled. Nothing but air. Even after the non-stud drilling, the finder repeatedly measured it as a stud. Save the money and time and invest in a better stud finder before wasting your money on this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Beginner Tool for DIYers I purchased this stud finder because I needed to install some shelving. It worked great the first time that I used it, but the second time that I went to use it (less than a month later), it was already having trouble finding the studs. So I changed the batteries and it was good as new. It works best if you remove the batteries when you aren't using it. I loved how easy it was to to use right out of the box, and that it was easy to do one handed (while I marked the studs with a pencil). A good tool for everyday DIY projects around the home.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for the everyday home owner I bought this to mount a TV in my son's bedroom. It's easy to operate. Now, I'm not an expert on stud finders but by running this thing across the wall, the studs are pretty easy to find. I did check and re-check the stud locations a few times and it's pretty accurate. I got a few misreadings but simply ran the studfinder over the wall again until I got a couple of the same readings in a row. This definitely fits the everyday homeowners needs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Zircon L40 StudSensor If the studs actually looked like an anaconda that swallowed a bunch of odd shaped objects I would have been impressed. I tried it in a garage project where putty and white paint could fix misses. In an area with no wires or pipes, some 1.5" studs were 6" wide, some 4", some zero. I used an old style magnetic nail locator with 5/8" sheetrock and tried to locate the stud 12" above and below. Nothing was reproducible. I ended up using the magnetic nail locator and a straight edge between to nail heads for the project. Great idea, but you still have to drive a finishing nail first to check. From my little test you would hit air 50% of the time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not work as advertised. We purchased this in the hope of using it for the intended purpose, which is to find studs. What it did was, regardless of the surface it was placed on (or even just the air), it insisted EVERYTHING was a stud, regardless of the material, rendering the product worth nothing more than a paperweight. I found a more accurate (and much cheaper) method of finding studs in your walls: tie a strong magnet to a string, and pass the magnet across the wall while holding the string. It'll attract to the studs (if they're metal) or the nails in the studs (if they're wood). It's 100% accurate, because that's how science works.
