Rated 5 de 5 de Jayson par What a great product! Used Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before staining a pine bed headboard we made. Followed the manufacturer directions and got exactly the result we wanted. Prepared the pine by sanding up to 180 grit. Applied the pre stain conditioner with a brush paying attention the knots to ensure full coverage, then removed the excess with a rag after 10-15 minutes. Let it dry for around an hour as it wasn’t too warm in our basement. Then applied Minwax Wood Finish Stain in Espresso colour (as per Minwax directions) and it looks fantastic. Thanks for the excellent products!

Rated 5 de 5 de Ford33 par Use on every wood stain project. Plan your work. I make cabinets and use Minwax oil based stain on them. I use the conditioner on every project. Follow the directions and wipe off all excess within 15 minutes and stain with 2 hours and results are great. Plan your work so you can do this within the time frame required. If you attempt to do too much staining within 15 minutes of application you will get poor results. Follow directions and get good results.

Rated 5 de 5 de TomKat par How to use it properly. I purchased this and tested it on some pine. I had some blotchy results initially when I tried to stain soon after I wiped off the excess. Best to let it dry a good hour or so then apply the stain and it will be perfect. You need to let the conditioner fully dry otherwise it hasn't created the proper seal below the surface.

I started staining after 15 minutes had passed and wiping off excess. Perhaps the product needs more drying time than 15 minutes? If it's better to wait an additional 15 min-1/2 hour, shouldn't the directions state, "2. Allow to penetrate for 5 to 15 minutes, then remove any excess with clean dry cloth. Wait 1/2 hour before applying stain. 3. Apply stain within 2 hours of application..." The window to stain is less but wouldn't the results be worth it?

I would say that I have more than enough experience working with these products and know what brands work well. I had not tried the Minwax wood conditioner until I received this product and was not very impressed. After using this product I felt that it did not prepare the wood for staining very well. I had to use a few coats for it to be ready and I was not happy with the results. In the future, I would look for different brands of wood conditioner.

We do stain our pieces a lot and did feel like we needed to do a little extra. This pre-stain is absolutely amazing! We sometimes sand our pieces, so we used this without sanding and with sanding. We followed the instructions carefully, blew off the excess and started to mix the conditioner. We brushed in the conditioner and waited about 15 minutes and then started to stain the wood. The pre-stain conditioner really transformed our pieces and made them look very smooth and brought out the natural wood effect. The pieces turned out beautiful. There were no streaks and each piece turned out so even and amazing. Love this stuff. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 de 5 de Rygo par Noticeably effective for large surfaces This review is for Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner (as purchased from a big-box retailer). I used it in fabricating a large woodworking project from furniture-grade birch veneer plywood. The scale of the project justified testing on scrap pieces beforehand the results of applying the stain (a medium-brown "pecan" color oil-based stain) both with and without using the pre-stain conditioner. At the scale of the scrap pieces (one foot square), the conditioner's effect of making the final stain more uniform in value was seemingly noticeable, but not what I would call "dramatic." However, when I used the conditioner on the final parts in the project (stained before assembly), the effect was indeed dramatic, not only across single large surfaces (some as large as 15 square feet), but from part to part, some stained several days apart. All the surfaces were consistently uniform in effect, with no dull or blotchy areas or out-of-control grain. Comparing the results to other large projects I have made without using the pre-stain conditioner, I could easily see that using the conditioner made a significant improvement in the quality of the finish. The only slightly negative aspect of using the conditioner is that the final color is, overall, very slightly lighter, on average, than unconditioned projects (made from the similar wood), but that's something that will be manageably predictable in future projects. (I can not comment, as others have, on the importance of following Minwax's instructions for timing the application process, or the consequences of ignoring them, because I followed them carefully; I wiped off excess conditioner after 10 minutes, and applied the final stain one hour later.) Bottom line: The value of using the pre-stain conditioner on relatively small surfaces may not be obvious, but I am very pleased with the results on large surfaces.

Rated 5 de 5 de Lana par Wonderful product, but.. I used this product prior to applying Special Oak and Weathered Oak over a test piece of pine- the results were so even and beautiful! On the barn door I applied the conditioner and it looked as if the product was blotchy.. I’m thinking the wood may have been a little too wet still so I didn’t proceed with the staining. I’m going to let the pine dry for a couple more weeks- then should I sand off the conditioner and start from ground zero? Or should I just apply another coat of conditioner and go from there? Thanks Minwax! :)
